Life at the office or on the construction site can be mentally and physically exhausting. Long hours coupled with hard work can be draining. The physical toll of both these environments can be taxing on your body, especially your posture.
Neck pain, back pain, general stiffness and soreness, as well as headaches are all side effects of unhealthy posture. Whether you work at a desk, in a cubicle, or are handy with power tools, your posture is vital to a healthy lifestyle.
At the Office
Working at an office has its benefits, especially after being required to work from home for so many months. However, there are many aspects of this environment that can be detrimental to your spinal health. Here are a couple of things to implement while at the office to improve and protect your postural wellbeing.
Better Posture tips
Don’t position yourself at a desk in which you have to look down at a computer monitor. Angling your neck downwards and promoting a forward head position can cause pain and neck stiffness or soreness. Instead, try to raise your screen to a high enough level that allows your neck and head to remain in a neutral position.
Do try to find a chair that encourages your hips to remain at a position higher than your knees. Comfy chairs that allow you to sink into them can be appealing, however this can promote your spine slouching into an unhealthy posture. Ensure that the chair does not slope backwards. When sitting, right angles are key. Hips higher than your knees and parallel to the ground, with your arm also at right angles, provide the greatest foundation for ergonomic posture while at the office.
Don’t sit for too long. Too often, our office requires long hours seated at a desk in front of a computer. Remaining in a seated posture, especially an incorrect position, can be detrimental to your spinal health. Try to stand up and move about to break up the day.
Physically Demanding Work
Working in a physically demanding job is taxing across all areas of the body. Whether it’s on the construction site, in the warehouse, or being a stay-at-home parent, protecting and maintaining your spinal posture is important. See below for a couple of tips for postural health while working in a physical role.
Don’t lift with an incorrect posture. Lifting with your back or lifting things that are too heavy can be disastrous to spinal wellbeing. Whether it’s heavy building materials on site or picking up kids while at home, ensure that you are bending your knees in order to protect your back from harm.
Do monitor your posture while at work. Continuously holding an unhealthy spinal posture can cause issues such as low back pain, stiffness, headaches, or neck pain. While working, try to maintain a neutral spine position to avoid these issues.
